With less than a month to go, preparations for Hoi
Polloi's A CHRISTMAS WITH HOI POLLOI, A NIGHT OF SONG
AND COMEDY, are in full swing. It was therefore
appropriate to interview Maria Agius the mastermind
behind the comical element of the forthcoming show. This
is what she has to say:
'We
were sitting round a table four people...thinking...what
can we do? Suddenly a common idea cropped up what about
a christmas show, part I singing and part II a play.
Marco asked ‘Who is up to take part II in their
hands?’. I must say I just couldn’t resist the
temptation so I raised my hand while thinking if I was
fit for this challenge. The latter thought soon
subsided to pure excitment and trepidation as Marco
gladly accepted.
Thoughts
went rushing...funny...2007..eurochangeover...minimal
expenses...only one character to fit all this Mr.
Ebinezeer Scrooge. You must be thinking ‘What’s comic
about Scrooge? In ‘A Christmas Carol’ there’s nothting
funny about the old miser who cares about noone and
nothing. Twisting the story and the characters around
just ‘slightly’ there it was a comical and satirical
version of the story of Scrooge written in Maltese.
Picture
this,we’ve got Mr. Scrooge bragging about the
eurochangeover on the 24.12.2007 in a rundown office
shouting that christmas is nothing but commercial. Poor
Mr.Cratchit, a clumsy big fellow who makes a mess of
everything he touches in the office is currently his
office assistant. He gets paid nothing more than the
minmum wage wth no consideration for overtime hours.
Later that night he is visited by 2 ghosts, one of which
is his business partner, Jacob Marley, pretty much into
bondage, who passed away 7 Christmas eve’s ago, precisely
before the new millenium. The other ghost .. well it's a
surprise. These 2 ghosts will take Scrooge on a journey
through time to help him realize that he has much more
to give to his loved ones! A mission impossible in
hollywood terms. He will revisit his relatives and in
particular his long lost love Rena.
Rehearsals
are in full swing now with just a few weeks to go.
Everybody’s working hard to put up a funny act, and it
truly will be a funny act. Even tough we hear the same
joke over and over during the rehersal we always end up
laughing.
Fasten your
seatbelts tinsils....past, present,and future...oh yes I
forgot the future, but that I’ll leave to you to
discover afterall it is still to come!' |
